Bryggen in Bergen at a glance
Bryggen is the historic harbour quarter on Vågen in Bergen, Norway. It has been on the World Heritage List since 1979. The long rows of wooden gables you see today go back largely to the rebuilding after the fire of 1702, and the narrow passages between the houses keep the plot pattern of the Middle Ages. Counts of the protected buildings run from about 62 to 65, depending on how they are counted.
This guide covers Bryggen and what surrounds it: guided walks, Bryggens Museum, the Hanseatic Museum and the Schøtstuene, the history of the wharf, and the rest of Bergen, from the Fløibanen funicular and the Ulriken cable car to the fish market, Bergenhus Fortress, Troldhaugen, fjord cruises, the Flåm Railway and the train from Oslo. You can walk through the quarter, which is kept open to the public as a smoke-free area. The museums and guided tours are paid separately. Prices are in Norwegian kroner (NOK) for 2026, and they change.

Our picks: tours around Bryggen and Bergen
The Nærøyfjord day trip is the long one, a full day by bus, boat and rail. For a half day, the Mostraumen cruise gives you a fjord straight from Bergen, and the small-group walk is a short way into Bryggen. The Ulriken tour and the Fløibanen food walk are the two ways up a mountain.

Bryggen and Bergen: frequently asked questions
Is Bryggen free to visit?
You can walk through the quarter, which is kept open to the public as a smoke-free area. This does not mean every building or every passage is open at all hours. The museums charge separately, and so do guided walks.
How long should I plan for Bryggen?
A walk through the passages takes a short time. The 90-minute guided walk that starts at Bryggens Museum, plus the museum itself, fills a morning. See Bergen tours.
Can I visit the Hanseatic Museum in 2026?
The Finnegården building is closed for renovation, with the reopening planned for spring 2027. In 2026 the visit takes place at the Schøtstuene, which are open daily from 10:00 to 18:00 between 1 May and 31 October. See the Hanseatic Museum page.
How do I get from Bergen Airport to the center?
Light rail line 1 runs from the lower terminal level to the center, and the airport bus stops in front of the terminal and in the center, including at Bryggen. Allow about 45 minutes. See the airport page.
When is the best time to visit Bergen?
Bergen has rain in every season. The Fløibanen summer fares apply from 1 April to 30 September, and the outdoor fish market runs from 1 May to 30 September. For the Vidden walk, June to September is the recommended season. See weather and seasons.
Is bryggen.org the official site of Bryggen?
No. This is an independent travel guide with no link to the foundation that looks after Bryggen, the municipality, the tourist office, any museum or any tour operator.
