The Oslo to Bergen train at a glance

The Bergen Line, called Bergensbanen in Norwegian, connects Oslo and Bergen on a high mountain route. The trip takes about 6.5 to 7.5 hours, depending on whether you take a day train or a night train, with generally 6 to 7 departures every day on the state railway Vy.

The line opened in 1909. Many travelers combine it with the classic side trip from Myrdal, described in our Flåm Railway day trips guide, and then explore the old wharf in Bergen on foot. The date and the timetable decide the exact departure, so check them for your day.

The route over the mountains

From the Oslo side to the Bergen side.

Hardangervidda

The line runs through the Hardangervidda region, a high mountain landscape. The highest point on the route is 1,237 m. That figure is the height of the line and not the height of the station at Finse.

Finse

Finse is the stop where hikers get off for the high mountains. If you plan to leave the train there, check the timetable for the next departure before you go.

Myrdal and the Flåm Railway

At Myrdal you can change to the Flåm Railway, which runs 20 km down to the fjord. Myrdal lies 867 m above sea level, and the trip takes about 1 hour one way. See the Flåm Railway page for the day trip from Bergen, and Nærøyfjord for the fjord beyond Flåm.

Planning the journey from Oslo to Bergen

A long day on the rails, and how to make it easy.

Allow a full day

With a travel time of about 6.5 to 7.5 hours, a morning departure from Oslo means an arrival in Bergen in the afternoon. Keep the evening free for a walk along the harbour, and leave heavy sightseeing for the next morning.

Food and water

Plan for a long trip. Bring snacks and water, and check what your train offers when you book, since services differ between trains.

Layers for the mountains

The high section is mountain country, and the weather there can differ from Oslo and from Bergen. Keep a warm layer and a rain jacket in your hand luggage. Bergen itself is wet, with a yearly normal of 2,495 mm for 1991 to 2020, so see Bergen weather for what to pack.

Train or plane

If you compare the train with a flight, remember the extra steps at both ends. At Bergen Airport the light rail takes about 45 minutes to the center, as a rough guide. The train arrives in the city itself.

Tickets and prices

Why there is no fixed fare.

How the price is set

The fare depends on the date, the departure and the ticket class. A price you saw earlier may not be available on your day, so compare the offers for your own date on the booking page of Vy.

Combined rail journeys

For journeys that combine the Bergen Line with the Flåm Railway, Vy is the place to ask. Interrail and Eurail passes have their own terms, so read them for your pass before you travel.

Check before you travel

Track work and closures with dates.

Track work

Bane NOR, the rail infrastructure manager, publishes work and closures. A nationwide closure for communication system maintenance is announced for January 10, 2027, from 02:00 to 07:00. It affects several lines.

On the day

Look at the timetable and the traffic messages on the morning of your trip. Do not plan a tight connection, such as a flight on the same evening, without buffer time.

When you arrive in Bergen

If you fly in instead, Bergen Airport has a light rail line to the center. For a bed near the old wharf, see where to stay in Bergen.
