Where to stay in Bergen: pick the area first

Bergen is a compact city on a harbour, and the right place for your bed depends on what you came for. Most visitors want to be near Bryggen, the old wharf with its wooden gables, and the harbour in front of it. Others prefer a quieter district with old houses or an address with an easy connection to the airport line.

This guide describes locations, not individual hotels, so you can search with the right area in mind. Room rates change with the date, the room and the taxes, so compare live offers for your own dates. If you plan your days around guided sights, our Bryggen walking tours start in the same part of town.

For most first visits, an address near Bryggen and the harbour is the simplest choice, because the World Heritage district and the Fløibanen are grouped there. Choose Nordnes for old streets, Nygård for concerts and Sandviken if you want to be away from the center.

Hotel areas in more detail

What each part of Bergen is like as a base.

Bryggen and the harbour

Bryggen is a World Heritage district that its owners and the foundation behind it keep open to visitors as a smoke-free area. Please keep cigarettes out of the lanes and be considerate of the people who live and work there. See the history of Bryggen for the story behind the buildings.

Nordnes

Nordnes is the district of old small houses and cobbled lanes, next to the aquarium. It suits travelers who like to walk through quiet streets after a day of sightseeing.

Nygård

Nygård lies close to Grieghallen. If you book a concert there, a nearby room saves you a late trip across town.

Sandviken

Gamle Bergen is at Elsesro in Sandviken. Allow about 40 minutes from the center on foot or by bus, but that time does not apply to every address in the district, so check the route from your exact hotel.

Getting to your hotel

Airport, train and local transport.

From the airport

Light rail line 1 runs from Bergen Airport to the center, and the flight bus stops at Bryggen as well. The ride takes about 45 minutes as a rough guide. All options are on the Bergen Airport page.

From Oslo

The Bergen Line ends in Bergen after about 6.5 to 7.5 hours. Read the Oslo to Bergen train guide before you choose the day or night train.

Local fares

A single ticket in one zone costs NOK 51 for adults and NOK 26 for children aged 6 to 17 and for seniors (2026). A 24-hour ticket costs NOK 136 for adults. Use the Skyss app, since the old Skyss Billett app is due to close in autumn 2026.

The card covers local buses and the light rail in Vestland and boats in zone A. It is not valid on Vy trains, express buses or regional ships and ferries. Some museums are free with the card and others give a discount, so it is not a pass to everything. You need internet to activate it, and the remaining time starts to run after activation. For most stays of two or three days, work out your own plan first: the card pays off only if you ride a lot and visit several museums.

Good to know before you book

Rain, a new charge and trips beyond town.

Rain

The yearly normal for 1991 to 2020 is 2,495 mm of rain at the Florida station. A hotel near public transport makes wet days easier. See Bergen weather for the seasons.

Visitor contribution

The municipality plans to introduce a visitor contribution during 2027. For stays later than that, check the rules for your dates before you compare totals.

Fjords and day trips

Your hotel area hardly matters for fjord trips, since you start at the harbour or the station. For the big fjords, see fjord trips from Bergen.
