Hanseatic Museum Bergen in 2026: Schøtstuene is open
The Hanseatic Museum tells the story of the Hanseatic merchants in Bergen. Its house, Finnegården, has been closed for renovation since 1 October 2018. The municipality plans a new exhibition and a reopening in spring 2027. That is a plan, not a date, so do not build a trip around it.
For a visit now, go to Schøtstuene at Øvregaten 50. These are the Hanseatic assembly rooms, a different address from Finnegården. They are open from 1 May to 31 October 2026, 10:00 to 18:00. Outside that season, check the current winter hours before you go. For a wider view of the quarter, start with our history of Bryggen or the Bryggen walking tours.

The Hanseatic League in Bergen
The Hanseatic office in Bergen dates to around 1350 or 1360, depending on how you count. The Hanseatic period is dated 1360 to 1754. The main business was dried fish exported from northern Norway and grain imported into the country. Narrow passages and long rows of houses on Bryggen still follow the medieval plot structure.
After 1754 the Norwegian Office, Det Norske Kontor, took over until it was dissolved in 1899. Trade did not stop when the German office closed. For the full timeline, including the fires and the road to World Heritage, read the history of Bryggen.
