Troldhaugen and Fantoft: what you can visit

Troldhaugen is the villa of the composer Edvard Grieg outside Bergen. The villa itself is closed for renovation, and reopening is planned for summer 2027. The concerts and the outdoor programme are a separate offer, and they do not give you entry to the villa interior.

Fantoft stave church is a different sight with its own ticket and its own hours. If you plan a day around both, use the table below to match the hours. If you would rather see more of the city with a guide on another day, compare the Bergen tours.

Edvard Grieg museum: the villa and the concerts

What is closed and what is on.

While the villa is closed, the visit centres on the grounds and the music. The summer programme runs from 19 May to 14 September, Tuesday to Sunday 10:00–16:00, with three concerts a day. The concert ticket costs NOK 450 and includes entry and the outdoor tour. A version that includes the bus from Bergen costs NOK 700. These dates describe the usual summer pattern, so check the current year's programme before you go, and do not plan a winter visit around it.

To get there by public transport, travel to the stop at Hop. From there it is a walk of 15 to 20 minutes. Parking is available at Troldhaugen. The route uses Bybanen, the light rail, and you should check the connection in the Skyss journey planner on the day you travel.

Fantoft stave church

A rebuilt church in a wooded setting.

The first church stood in Fortun and dates from around 1170 to 1200. It was moved in 1883, burned down in an arson attack in 1992, and was rebuilt, with the work finished in 1997. The church you see today is a reconstruction, and you should treat it as such rather than as an unchanged medieval building.

Hours in 2026

The church is open from 2 May to 15 September, 10:30–18:00, and closed on 17 May. From 16 September to 1 December it is open Tuesday to Saturday 10:00–16:00. Hours in summer can vary by weekday, so check the day you plan to go.

Prices in 2026

Adults pay NOK 90, students NOK 70 with ID, and children NOK 50. The cashier closes 15 minutes before closing time.

Getting there

Take Bybanen line 1 to the stop at Fantoft and follow the signed footpath. Another way in leads from Paradis along a steep forest path. The church is not wheelchair accessible.

For most visitors, Fantoft is the simpler trip in 2026, and Troldhaugen fits a summer day when the concert programme runs. If you do both in one day, go to Troldhaugen first, because its programme ends at 16:00 and Fantoft stays open until 18:00 in summer.

Where these two trips fit.

Both sights are easier on a dry day, since the paths at Fantoft are steep and wooded. The Bergen weather page shows which months are drier. The things to do in Bergen list the sights in the centre, and where to stay covers the areas with the easiest access to Bybanen.
