Fish market Bergen: outdoor stalls and Mathallen
The fish market, Fisketorget in Norwegian, has two parts that work differently. The outdoor market runs in summer, from 1 May to 30 September. The Mathallen is the indoor hall and is open in winter when the outdoor market is closed.
The market has been a meeting place between fishermen, farmers and townspeople since the 13th century. Today you come for seafood, a meal or a look around. If you prefer to see the area with a guide, our Bergen guided walks are a good way to combine the market with the old town.

Opening times: outdoor market and Mathallen
The two parts keep different hours.
| Part | Season | Hours |
|---|---|---|
| Outdoor market | 1 May to 30 September | Frame 08:00 to 23:00, core hours 10:00 to 18:00 |
| Mathallen, restaurant hours | 15 April to 15 October | Daily 09:00 to 23:00 |
| Mathallen, restaurant hours | 15 October to 15 April | Daily 10:00 to 22:00 |
| Outdoor market in winter | Outside the season | – |
These are the hours for restaurants in the hall, not a promise that every fishmonger sells fish at the same times. Closing times in the hall run from 21:30 to 23:00 depending on the business and the season, with Monday to Saturday opening at 09:00 and Sunday at 10:00 in 2026, and the hall is closed on 25 December. Fishmongers and restaurants keep separate hours, so confirm the closing time of the stall you want. For most visitors, the middle of the day is the safest time, because it falls inside the core hours of the outdoor market.

What to expect when you visit
A short guide to the market.
Summer: the outdoor market
Between 1 May and 30 September the outdoor market is the main attraction. The core hours from 10:00 to 18:00 are binding, and stalls may vary their hours outside them. Opening times can differ from stall to stall.
Winter: the Mathallen
The regular outdoor market is closed in winter, but the Mathallen is open indoors. A few outdoor sales on Saturdays are not the same as a full summer market.
Prices and choice
Prices differ by stall and dish, so look at the menus before you sit down. Compare a few stalls if you are choosing between a snack and a full meal.
Time of day
Plan a meal outside the busiest hours if you want a quieter visit. Check the time you want to eat against the closing time of the stall.
